As we move into the cooler months, so too does cold and flu season begin.

There are many variations of cold & flu teas available online, but this one is my personal favourites. It helps to keeps you hydrated and is super easy to prepare.

It combines an absolute powerhouse of ingredients!

Honey – Not only does it taste fantastic, but it helps to soothe the throat and reduce the severity of that nasty cough*

Fresh Ginger – Fresh ginger is one of my favourite Chinese medicinals, traditionally used to ‘vent’ pathogens from the body. It also exhibits, anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties*

Garlic – The addition of garlic can be a tad too potent for some, so omit this ingredient if you find the tea undrinkable. But garlic has both anti-microbial and immune-enhancing properties*

Lemon – Packed with Vitamin C which is thought to reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms.

Turmeric – one of it’s active compounds, curcumin, acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory*

Cayenne Pepper – Acts like a natural decongestant by clearing the sinuses.

Peppermint – Like ginger, peppermint in Traditional Chinese Medicine is used to help expel pathogens from the body. It has both antiviral and analgesic properties*

I suggest starting to drink this tea the moment your nose starts to run or feel that initial tickle in the throat (though better late than never!). The tea is best drunk twice daily while symptomatic.

Ingredients:

2 Tablespoons of good quality honey (preferably Manuka)

3 thick slices of fresh ginger

2 cloves garlic, sliced (optional)

1 Teaspoon turmeric powder (or three slices of fresh turmeric root)

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper powder (to taste)

Juice of 1 lemon

1 Peppermint tea bag

Method:

Add all ingredients to a mug and fill with hot water (you can use a tea strainer for the ginger, garlic, turmeric and cayenne pepper if preferred).

Allow to steep for 5 minutes.

Remove teabag and tea strainer (this comes down to personal preference – I leave all of the ingredients in the cup while I drink the tea)

Enjoy while hot!
