Pregnancy & Postpartum Support
Pregnancy changes everything: your body, your energy, your sleep, your emotions. Some of those changes feel exciting, others feel hard, and most of the time it’s a bit of both. Each trimester brings something different, and what you need from your health care shifts as you move through it.
Chinese Medicine has a long tradition of supporting pregnancy. Treatment is adapted to be safe and gentle at every stage, with the aim of helping you feel more comfortable, more resilient, and more supported as your body does the enormous work of growing a baby.
After birth, the focus shifts. Postpartum recovery in Chinese Medicine is treated with the same seriousness as pregnancy itself, because how you recover affects your energy, your mood, and your long-term health. This is care for you, not just for the baby.
Support Through Each Trimester
Treatment during pregnancy is always adapted to your stage and your individual needs. In the first trimester, the priority is often managing nausea, fatigue, and the emotional adjustment to early pregnancy. In the second, treatment may focus on maintaining energy, easing muscular discomfort as your body changes, and supporting sleep. In the third trimester, the focus often shifts to preparing the body for labour, addressing lower back or pelvic pain, and helping you feel as physically ready as possible.
Acupuncture during pregnancy uses carefully selected points that are safe for each stage. The approach is gentle, and many people find their sessions deeply relaxing at a time when real rest can feel hard to come by.
Chinese herbal medicine can also be used during pregnancy when appropriate, though prescribing is more conservative than in non-pregnant patients. Any herbs I recommend will be chosen with safety as the first priority and tailored to your specific needs.

Labour Preparation
From around 36 weeks, acupuncture can be used to help prepare your body for labour. Pre-birth acupuncture focuses on supporting energy reserves, calming the nervous system, and helping you feel physically ready. It is typically given weekly in the final month of pregnancy, and many people find it helps with sleep, anxiety, and physical comfort during those last weeks.
For breech presentation, moxibustion (a gentle heat therapy using the herb mugwort) is a well-known traditional technique applied at a specific acupuncture point. Moxibustion for breech presentation is one of the most researched areas of Chinese Medicine in pregnancy, with encouraging results across multiple clinical trials. It is usually used between weeks 33 and 36, and I can show you and your support person how to continue it at home between sessions.
These treatments are gentle, safe, and designed to work with your body’s own timing rather than forcing anything.
Recovery After Birth
In Chinese Medicine, the postpartum period is known as the ‘Golden Month’ and it considered one of the most important times for a person’s long-term health. The body has just done something extraordinary, and how it recovers in those early weeks and months matters enormously.
Postpartum treatment focuses on rebuilding what’s been depleted: energy, blood, and the body’s core reserves. In TCM terms, pregnancy and birth draw heavily on Qi and Blood, and if these aren’t replenished, fatigue, low mood, poor sleep, and physical discomfort can linger much longer than they need to.
Acupuncture and herbal medicine may support postpartum recovery by encouraging energy production, supporting sleep, easing muscular or joint pain, supporting mood and emotional balance, and helping the body heal. Treatment is always gentle and adapted to your needs, whether you’re two weeks postpartum or six months.
This is care for the person who gave birth. It’s easy for your own health to fall to the bottom of the list when you’re focused on a newborn, and one of the most valuable things I can offer is a space where the focus is entirely on you.
