Skin Health
Skin health goes beyond how things look on the surface. It affects comfort, confidence, and daily life in real, tangible ways. Breakouts, persistent redness, dryness or dull tone can affect how you feel when you look in the mirror, how comfortable you are in social settings, and how much energy you spend trying to manage it all.
In Chinese Medicine, the skin is understood as a reflection of what’s happening inside the body. When internal systems are balanced and circulation is strong, the skin often looks and feels healthier. When something is off, whether that’s stress, hormonal shifts, poor digestion, or inflammation, the skin is often one of the first places it shows up.
This is why I take an inside-out approach. Rather than treating the surface alone, I look at the patterns underneath: what’s driving the issue, what’s keeping it stuck, and what your body needs to start resolving it.
Treating Root & Branch
In Chinese Medicine, there’s a concept called “root and branch.” The branch is what you can see: the breakout, the redness, the dry patch. The root is what’s driving it from the inside: stress, hormonal changes, sluggish digestion, poor sleep, or a system that’s running too hot or too cold.
Treating the branch alone can bring short-term relief. Treating the root alongside it is where longer-lasting change tends to happen. This is why skin concerns that persist despite good topical care or dermal treatments can sometimes shift when the internal picture is also addressed.
I look at what your skin is doing, but I also look at everything around it: your energy, your digestion, your stress levels, your cycle if relevant. That fuller picture is what guides the treatment.

How Treatment Works
Treatment is always tailored to you. Two people with acne can have completely different underlying patterns in Chinese Medicine, which means their treatment plans will look different too.
A typical approach may include acupuncture to improve circulation, calm inflammation, and regulate the systems that influence skin health. Chinese herbal medicine is often used alongside acupuncture to provide daily internal support between sessions. For many people, this combination is what allows treatment to work on multiple levels at once.
Facial therapies like cosmetic acupuncture and gua sha can also be woven into your treatment plan. These work locally to encourage blood flow, support lymphatic drainage, and leave your skin feeling softer and more alive. When combined with body treatment, many people notice a more lasting difference.
I may also suggest simple adjustments to diet or lifestyle based on your Chinese Medicine pattern. These aren’t rigid rules; they’re practical, manageable changes that support your skin from the inside.
Common Skin Concerns
People come to me with all sorts of skin concerns. Some have been dealing with a condition for years, others are noticing changes for the first time. Whatever the situation, I’ll work with you to understand the full picture before we begin.
What commonly brings people in:
- Acne and hormonal breakouts
- Eczema, dermatitis, and dry, irritated skin
- Rosacea and persistent facial redness
- Dull complexion or uneven skin tone
- Skin changes linked to stress, sleep, or digestion
- Recovery and support alongside dermal or medical skin treatments
If your concern isn’t listed here, it’s still worth getting in touch. Skin health is one of my core clinical interests and I’m always happy to chat about whether Chinese Medicine could be a good fit.
Working Alongside Other Skin Professionals
Skin health often benefits from a team approach. For many people, the best results come from combining Chinese Medicine with dermal therapy, dermatology, or other treatments. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can address the internal factors that influence how your skin behaves, while your dermal clinician or dermatologist addresses things at the surface level.
If you’re already working with a skin professional, I’m happy to coordinate care so your treatments complement each other. And if you’re looking for referrals, I can point you in the right direction.
