Gua Sha
Gua sha has been practiced in China for centuries, and it is still just as relevant today. The name means “scraping sha,” which refers to clearing out areas of stagnation so things can move more freely again. In Chinese Medicine, stagnation is often what sits behind pain, stiffness or that heavy, stuck feeling in the body.
A gua sha treatment uses a smooth edged tool, often made from stone, porcelain or wood, that is gently glided across the skin along the body’s meridians. The effect is simple yet powerful. It helps to release tight muscles, improve circulation and get Qi and Blood flowing again. Traditionally, people used whatever was at hand, from carved horn to soup spoons, which shows just how much of a trusted folk remedy this technique has always been.
After treatment it is common to see some redness or little speckles on the skin, especially in areas where tension has been sitting for a while. These marks are not painful and will fade within a few days. Most people walk away feeling lighter, looser and more at ease straight after their session.
Facial Gua Sha
Facial gua sha has become popular in recent years, and for good reason. It is gentle, relaxing and leaves the skin looking fresher straight away. Done professionally, it can help to:
- Support lymphatic drainage to help reduce puffiness
- Encourage circulation to brighten and refresh the complexion
- Relax facial muscles, supporting a more lifted and toned appearance
Unlike body gua sha, facial gua sha is not meant to bring up sha. Instead, it works with light, flowing strokes until the skin has that healthy pink glow. Think of it as a workout for your face, only instead of sweat you are left with radiance.
It also pairs beautifully with cosmetic acupuncture, helping to extend results and keep the skin looking and feeling its best.
Everyday Self Care
One of the lovely things about gua sha is that it can also be practiced at home. With the right guidance and a smooth stone, you can gently release jaw tension, ease a tight neck or give your skin a healthy glow in just a few minutes. I often show patients simple techniques they can safely use between treatments.
